As noted above, UNVA grants college credit for certain outside training and courses. All decisions on credit are the responsibility of the dean of the school upon recommendation from the department chairs. In no case will the total number of credit hours achieved by alternative credit transfer exceed nine credit hours.

College Level Exam Program (CLEP)

The university participates in the CLEP administered by the College Board and is an official testing site. UNVA grants undergraduate credits to newly admitted and regularly enrolled students who achieve passing scores on the CLEP exams, as approved by the appropriate Department Chairs.

Challenge Examinations

In lieu of registering for an undergraduate course, a student may request a challenge examination. (Students who have received a grade in a class taken at UNVA may not take a challenge exam in that course.) These exams allow students to receive credit or waive the requirement for a course by passing a comprehensive test of the course material. The appropriate department must grant permission, and the instructor will determine the examination format (written, oral, practical, combination, etc.). At the option of the student and instructor, the examination may be graded on either the normal or the S/U basis, and the examination points earned will be equivalent to a final grade in the course. Credit hours and grade points earned in this way are equivalent to those earned through successful completion of courses. The following regulations will apply to all challenge examinations:

1. permission of the instructor of the course is required, and the examination will be given at a time of the instructor's choosing;

2. information as to the nature of the challenge examination will be made available to a student upon request.

Technical Credit

Under special circumstances, students may receive credit for technical courses that are not normally transferable to UNVA. A written request must be submitted for review to both the proper Department Chair.

Training Credit

Academic credit for non-collegiate training programs may be granted based on recommendations of the appropriate departmentl. Official records must be supplied to the Admissions Office of UNVA by the appropriate sources during the student's first semester of enrollment in a degree-seeking status.

Military Credit

Credit for training received at military service training schools may be granted based on recommendations of the appropriate office. Official records must be supplied to the Admissions Office of UNVA by the appropriate sources during the first semester of a student's enrollment in a degree-seeking status.
